Leadership during this Pandemic What are we learning

The COVID-19 pandemic has provided remarkable leadership challenges and opportunities. Having been through the escalation and emergency stages (1 and 2), many regions across Canada have been wading uncomfortably in the recovery stage (3), which requires a vast array of leadership capabilities. This prolonged limbo-like stage is taking its toll on people’s mental health, as well as the economy, and the pressure to open things up is countered by the looming threat of a second wave and the need to prepare for it. At the same time, we have seen outstanding examples of leadership, rapid innovation, and collaborations that far exceed pre-crisis experiences. Health leaders are now tasked with striking the best balance between health, safety and freedom, preparing for another emergency and encouraging and supporting innovation, and providing care and support for staff, while at the same time motivating them with purpose and direction.
This two-part session will begin with an overview of the four stages of leadership in a crisis, as well as the key characteristics of stage 3 (the recovery stage), where most jurisdictions are now. This will be followed by a group discussion of Manitoba-specific successes, challenges, and opportunities. A second session will follow on July 28th that will extend the discussion to further clarify opportunities and next steps for Manitoba health leaders.

Dr. Jaason Geerts, PhD, Director of Research and Leadership Development, LEADS Canada
Dr. Jaason Geerts has a PhD from the University of Cambridge in leadership for professionals and is the director of research and leadership development at the Canadian College of Health Leaders and an Honorary Visiting Fellow at the Cass Business School in London (UK). Since the announcement of the pandemic on March 11, Jaason has devoted his research efforts entirely to leadership during this crisis and his work has been featured on the British Medical Journal Leader, in the Globe and Mail, and on the CBC national news (articles attached). He is currently leading the College’s research initiative that has already received input from hundreds of senior leaders in 16 different countries.
Maintenance of Certification
Attendance at this program entitles certified Canadian College of Health Leaders members (CHE / Fellow) to 1.50 Category I credits toward their maintenance of certification requirement.
